Can I use the fireplace or wood stove?
Yes, using dry and untreated wood, and only if there is no local burning ban in effect. Keep the chimney damper open until the fire is completely extinguished.
Only use dry, untreated wood. Painted or treated wood, cardboard, and waste produce harmful smoke and cause creosote buildup in the chimney. The wood provided in the house is suitable.
Lighting the fire
- Fully open the chimney damper and the air intake.
- Build the fire up using kindling and a firelighter.
- Only add larger logs once the fire is burning well.
- Never close the air intake completely while the fire is burning.
Never leave the fire unattended and keep the chimney damper open until the very last ember is out: a closed damper can cause carbon monoxide to enter the house. Use the fire screen if there are children or pets around. During periods of drought or smog, a local burning ban may apply.
